Why should I have my gear cleaned or detailed?Having your gear detailed or cleaned is important for several reasons. Leather was at one time living skin. Skin naturally cares for itself by adding oil and hydration to keep it flexible and strong. Without these things, it becomes brittle and delicate. Skin can heal though. Leather cannot. If we do not take care of leather, it becomes brittle, weak, and can crack. You can lose your valuable saddle or worse, you can be injured due to equipment failure. It is important to inspect your equipment frequently and detailing/cleaning also allows for another inspection of your equipment. A second set of eyes can help prevent catastrophes. You save money by caring for your saddle instead of buying a new one. A new brand name saddle can cost more than $1500 and a custom saddle can cost more than $4000! Whether you just bought one or have an older one, care for it so it will last you longer and save you money. Restore your history. Having something that has been passed down to you is truly special. Don’t lose your history. Keep tradition alive. Preserve your history and the stories you build in your life. Well-cared for leather gear can last for generations. Isn't it great to think that someday your grandchildren could be riding your saddle or using your holster! Leave a legacy. If you want to leave a legacy, you need to be able to build your story. If you have an older saddle or just bought a new one, maintain it to keep it beautiful and functional, then live your story. The same reasons you shoe your horses or have your truck serviced or trailer bearings packed. You care about your animals and equipment. You also know that if you want them to last and take care of you, you have to take care of them.

I'm in another state. Can I ship my saddle or other piece of tack to you?Yes, you can! The first step is to contact us. From there we can discuss what your saddle needs and how to get it to us. If you emailed us, we will also schedule a time to talk to you on the phone. We're a bit old fashioned and consider it The Saddle Salon Way of introducing ourselves and extending a handshake.

Why use the term "detailing" and what is it?"Cleaning was a term I used for many years until I saw the varying degrees of clean. What some called clean, others did not. I also knew from experience that sometimes you would deeply clean and other times, it was more of a quick maintenance clean. Basically maintaining a saddle or other piece of my tack was like taking care of my truck. Sometimes it needed a quick wash and vacuum. Other times, it needed to be thoroughly detailed which got deep into the cracks and crevices. That's when it hit me. Sometimes I cleaned my saddle and other times, I detailed my saddle. Detailing is the proper deep cleaning and conditioning of leather to restore flexibility, performance, and safety for both horse and rider. Detailing involves partially disassebling the saddle. It takes time and experience but it is worth it. We work hard to ensure the best job possible. There is difference and the difference is in the details.

Why do you recommend a Platinum Detail or Gold Cleaning first? The goal of both a Platinum Detail and a Gold Cleaning is to restore leather to a better condition with greater flexibility, performance, and longevity. In both processes, we work to remove as much dirt, grime, old oil, and horse sweat as possible. In a Platinum Detail, we actually do a partial disassembly of the saddle. Both are time intensive but well worth the effort. Then we can properly maintain leather through regular cleanings. *In some cases, our restoration detailing may be needed in order to get a saddle back into shape. Please see "What is restoration detailing?" for more information.

What is restoration detailing? This service is where we truly breathe life back into leather. It is for very dry and/or dirty gear. The major goal is restoring the leather back to a flexible and usable state. If your leather is showing any of these signs, it may need restoration because these are signs of severely dry leather. Leather is stiff and has little to no flex. Leather is curling. It is also for over-oiled leather. Over-oiling can cause the leather fibers to become weak and to deteriorate quicker. The major goal is to restore leather back to a balanced state and reduce the rate of deterioration. The easiest way to tell leather is over-oiled is if the leather feels "sticky" or "oily" long after it was last oiled. This service is available for saddles, tack, and other leather gear. Restoration detailing is more time and material intensive than Platinum Detailing. Pricing varies. Free consultations available. *This saddle is an example of one we would recommend for our restoration detailing. It is extremely dry. Notice how curled the jockeys are. The leather is so stiff that if bent, it will crack and break.

How long does it take?It depends on what service we are doing for you and what kind of item it is. For instance, a Platinum Detail on a saddle is about 7-10 business days depending on the condition of the saddle. If you have already had your saddle detailed and you are having your saddle cleaned, the turn around time is between 2-4 days. However, everything is done by appointment. We at The Saddle Salon know you need your gear. We do not have you leave your gear with us only to wait and wonder for months on end when it will be completed. We set up a drop-off date and a pick-up date so you know in advance and can make plans. *We do our best to stay on schedule but due to Covid, the availability of supplies, and shipping dates that are out of our control, we sometimes have to adjust. We will maintain communication with our clients and discuss such issues as they occur. Thank you for understanding.
